Sarlat-La-Canéda, the capital of Périgord Noir, was a great abbey in the Middle Ages, and since medieval times it has become a prosperous town. Much of its present-day character stems from its Renaissance ornamentation.
Sarlat has managed to preserve its ancient buildings intact, and nowadays it is one of Europe’s finest medieval clusters. You can explore its narrow, winding streets, its vaulted passages, its cathedral, etc.
Twice a week (on Wednesday and Saturday mornings) you can go to the market and discover many local products.
The cinema also plays an important part in the town’s cultural life. A film festival is held each year in November. Each festival brings together many actors, film stars, producers, directors and film technicians.
