Martel, the town of 7 towers

Martel, a picturesque little town in the Lot department, about 30km from Castelnaud-la-Chapelle in south-west France, is well worth a visit for its medieval architecture, gastronomy, lively markets and numerous festivals and events. It is nicknamed the“Town of 7 Towers” because of the seven medieval towers that can be seen in the town near the Martel campsite. These towers were built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the lords of Martel to protect the town from invaders. Today, only four of these towers are still standing, but they are nonetheless a symbol of Martel and a must-see when visiting the town.

Martel is an ideal town for gourmets, as you can sample local produce at one of the many markets held in Martel, such as the weekly local produce market or the truffle market in winter. If you decide to take a stroll through the town, you can wander through the narrow streets, admire the half-timbered houses and visit the various monuments, such as the 13th-century château, the 12th-century church of Saint-Martin or the ancient bridge over the Lot.

If you’re traveling with young children, the Martel steam train is an ideal way to visit the town as a family, as they’re sure to enjoy the ride and discover the town in a fun and original way. This environmentally-friendly steam train departs from Place du 8 Mai 1945 in the center of Martel. It then circles the town, passing by all the main monuments and attractions, before heading off into the countryside, a must-do during your Martel camping vacation.
