Camping Marqueyssac
The Marqueyssac hanging gardens
A visit to the gardens of Marqueyssac is an essential part of your stay in the Dordogne Valley at the Marqueyssac campsite. These exceptional gardens, listed as a “Monument Historique”, were created in the 19th century by Pierre de Montessus de Ballore, then owner of the Château de Marqueyssac. His idea was to create these hanging gardens on the cliffs overlooking the Dordogne valley. Today, the gardens of Marqueyssac are one of the most visited sites in the Dordogne valley, with over 150,000 visitors a year. They offer breathtaking views over the valley and the medieval castles that dot it. A stroll through the gardens is very relaxing, and you’ll be amazed by the size and variety of shapes of the thousands of box trees: spheres, cones and pyramids.
If you want to extend your visit to Marqueyssac, you can also explore the château and its grounds. The château is open to the public, and you can admire its machicolations, keep and chapel. In the park, you’ll find a children’s playground and a boxwood labyrinth. The château dates back to the 13th century and has been a listed historic monument since 1971. It’s one of the most beautiful castles in the Dordogne valley, with its machicolations, keep and chapel.
The Marqueyssac campsite is also the starting point for numerous hiking trails, enabling you to discover the most beautiful landscapes in the Dordogne valley.
