Camping Castelnaud-la-Chapelle

Castelnaud-la-Chapelle,
a village in the heart of castles

The Castelnaud-la-Chapelle castles are a group of medieval fortifications located in the commune of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, in the Dordogne region of south-western France. They were built by the Lords of Beaufort between the 12th and 13th centuries to control the road between Bordeaux and Toulouse. They comprise a series of towers, walls and sentry boxes, as well as a keep and chapel.

This group of medieval fortifications includes a total of five castles around the Castelnaud-la-Chapelle campsite:

• Castelnaud Castle
• Château des Milandes
• Château de Fayrac
• Château de la Roque Gageac
• Château de Beynac

Now open to the public, it’s worth noting that these fortifications have had a rather tumultuous history in the past. First damaged during the Hundred Years’ War, then rebuilt in the 15th century, they were again damaged during the French Wars of Religion in the 16th century.
Restored in the 19th century, this complex of medieval fortifications is now a museum. Visitors can explore the various rooms and towers, and enjoy views of the surrounding countryside from the top of the walls. Guided tours are also available.
