The Lascaux caves are a priceless treasure trove of prehistoric cave art, located in the Vézère valley in Dordogne, France. Discovered in 1940 by four teenagers, the caves contain rock paintings dating back some 17,000 years to the Upper Paleolithic.
The Lascaux caves consist of several rooms decorated with exceptional frescoes depicting mainly wild animals, such as bison, horses, deer and aurochs, as well as geometric figures and mysterious symbols. These works of art bear witness to the talent and creativity of prehistoric man, and to his close relationship with nature and the world around him.
Unfortunately, due to the fragility of the paintings and the threat of alteration from the influx of visitors, the original Lascaux caves were closed to the public in 1963. However, a faithful replica of the main rooms, known as Lascaux II, was opened nearby in 1983, enabling visitors to discover and admire these prehistoric masterpieces in controlled, preserved conditions.
