History of the Château de Fénelon
Château de Fénelon, nestled in the Dordogne valley, dates back to the 13th century. Originally built as a medieval fortress, it was designed to withstand assaults, particularly during the Hundred Years’ War. Its imposing towers and solid ramparts bear witness to its defensive role at the time.
In the 16th century, the château took on particular importance during the Wars of Religion. It became a Huguenot stronghold under the influence of the Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon family, whose most famous member was François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon, future archbishop and renowned writer.
Over the centuries, the Château de Fénelon underwent several architectural transformations. In the 17th century, Renaissance elements were added, softening its original austere appearance. Each owner contributed to enriching the château, adding art and furniture collections. Today, Château de Fénelon is a historic site open to the public, offering a captivating glimpse of medieval and Renaissance life in the Périgord Noir. Meticulous restoration and rich collections make the château a living testimony to French history.
