History and mission of the Reserve

Founded in 2007, the Réserve Zoologique de Calviac was born of a passion and commitment to the conservation of biodiversity. Located near Sarlat, this 20-hectare reserve was created with the primary mission of protecting small and medium-sized species threatened with extinction. By focusing on species often overlooked by large-scale conservation programs, Calviac plays a crucial role in safeguarding animal genetic diversity. In addition to its conservation efforts, the reserve is dedicated to environmental education, offering visitors valuable insights into the importance of each species in our global ecosystem. Through its programs, Calviac aims to inspire and mobilize the public for a more sustainable and nature-friendly future.

Animals and habitats

The Réserve Zoologique de Calviac is home to an impressive diversity of species, all meticulously selected for their worrying conservation status. Notable residents include Madagascar lemurs, which roam freely in a large aviary faithfully reproducing their natural forest habitat. Visitors can also get an up-close look at the fascinating Parma kangaroos, evolving in an area that simulates Australian undergrowth, as well as polar foxes adapted to cold environments, housed in spaces that mimic Arctic tundras. Each habitat at the reserve is designed to offer not only a safe haven but also an environment that encourages the animals’ natural behaviors, essential to their psychological and physical well-being. Natural watering holes, hiding places and climbing structures are integrated to enrich their daily lives. What’s more, the vegetation in each enclosure is chosen to resemble that of the species’ natural habitats, creating a microcosm where they can thrive. This attention to detail not only ensures the health and happiness of the animals, but also contributes to an immersive experience for visitors.

Activities and experiences

The Réserve Zoologique de Calviac offers a range ofeducational and interactive activities to delight children and adults alike. Visitors can take part in enriching guided tours that explain in detail the reserve’s conservation efforts and allow them to observe the animals in conditions that respect their natural environment. Educational workshops are also offered, giving participants the opportunity to learn more about the biology and ecology of endangered species. For a more immersive experience, the reserve organizes feeding sessions where visitors can watch the animals being fed under the supervision of experienced caretakers. These activities are designed not only to entertain, but also to raise public awareness of the importance of preserving biodiversity.
