The history of Les Jardins de Marqueyssac

The Gardens of Marqueyssac trace their origins back to the 17th century, when they were laid out around the eponymous château, situated on a rocky spur overlooking the Dordogne valley. Originally conceived as a classical garden, it was transformed in the 19th century by Julien de Cerval, a botanical enthusiast. He spent almost 30 years shaping the gardens, introducing over 150,000 hand-trimmed box trees, for which the site is now famous. He also added winding paths and numerous belvederes to allow visitors to admire the surrounding countryside. In 1942, the gardens were listed as a Monument Historique in recognition of their heritage value. Today, Marqueyssac is a perfect example of a French garden, where topiary art blends with wild nature, offering a unique experience to visitors to the Périgord Noir.

A hanging garden above the Dordogne river

Perched over 130 metres above the valley, the Jardins de Marqueyssac offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Dordogne. Situated on a limestone cliff, these hanging gardens reveal a breathtaking view of the meandering river, the surrounding castles, and picturesque villages such as La Roque-Gageac. The highlight of the visit is the Belvédère de la Dordogne, a platform at the end of the gardens offering 360° views. This exceptional setting, blending nature and history, is a real asset to the site, making Marqueyssac an ideal place for contemplation and photography. Strolling along the shady paths, visitors also discover Mediterranean vegetation contrasting with the clumps of pruned boxwood, creating a perfect harmony between wild nature and man’s landscape creations.
