The underground chamber at Gouffre Padirac

Exploration of the Gouffre de Padirac:
An extraordinary journey underground

The Gouffre du Padirac stands like an open door to the bowels of the Earth in the Lot department.

Discovered in 1889 by Edouard-Alfred Martel, this spectacular chasm plunges 103 metres underground, offering direct access to an exceptional subterranean universe.

Its formation, linked to the erosion and collapse of limestone soils, makes it a site of major scientific and historical importance. Situated not far from iconic sites such as Rocamadour, the Gouffre du Padirac is a must-see for nature and adventure enthusiasts in France.

Underground river

Navigating the underground river at Gouffre du Padirac is an unforgettable experience for families and friends alike. This mysterious stream winds its way through natural galleries sculpted by erosion, offering a breathtaking spectacle of rock formations and allowing you to move between chambers. The silence, broken only by the murmuring of the water, adds to the magical atmosphere of this descent into the depths of the Earth.

Rainy Lake

Lac de la Pluie, so named because it is fed by rainwater filtering through the rock, creates a peaceful and mysterious mirror of water.

The latter reflects the suspended stalactites, creating an enchanting visual effect. It’s a moment of pure natural beauty, where water and stone meet in harmony.

Lac des Gours

The Lac des Gours, with its natural calcite dams forming basins of crystal-clear water, is another marvel to discover. These formations, known as gours, offer a fascinating spectacle, testifying to the power and patience of nature in its sculptural work.
